Saturday morning gains with Greg at Mekanix did not disappoint! (You can follow Greg on Instagram @gregorygains_) I had literally no idea what I was getting myself into when I scheduled this class. I saw an event for Mekanix scroll across my newsfeed on Facebook and selected that I was interested in attending even though I knew I was going to be out of town for the class. A day or so before the workshop, Justin reached out to me via Facebook messenger asking me if I was planning on attending. I told him I was going to be out of town but wanted to try a class so after a few minutes of back and forth messaging, he had booked me into a complimentary class on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM with Greg. Let me just point out that the customer service for this place was on point, even before I had stepped foot into the building.
Mekanix is a small metal building on Montrose with big glass garage doors. It’s pretty damn discrete. I have driven down Montrose right past it many many times and never even noticed it was there. In fact, I had it plugged into my GPS and still passed it up, had to take a trip around the block to get back to it. The parking lot is only about 4-6 spaces so if a class fills up, I am not sure where you would have to park. Luckily for me, there were only 3 people in the class before and 1 other in the class I took so I was set.
I got there about 15-20 minutes early to watch the class before me. I really had no clue what I was walking into and as I watched, I started to get slightly nervous. They were all on the rings, like the kind you would find in a gymnastics place, doing some pretty strenuous things with their bodies. The amount of control they had with their bodies was awe-inspiring, especially Greg, the instructor. Holy cow!
Lucky for me, my class didn’t involve rings, although I was kind of hoping to test myself. Mekanix is a calisthenic workout (exercises to develop strength and flexibility that are done without special equipment). The exercises were VERY UNIQUE. I knew maybe 3 out of 15 of the exercises that we did. We stretched out first then moved on to bear crawls, lizard crawls, squat jumps with weights, lots of walks with squats, ball slams, then these ab hold things that were HARD AF and quite a few other exercises and OH MY QUADS! By the end of the hour I was drenched and literally slinging sweat around.
If you are looking for a full body workout, with some really encouraging people, you should definitely give Mekanix a try. Again, this was another one of the places I visited where there was a ton of comradery and fit bumping and high fiving and there were only 3 of us there! Love how many great people I am meeting through doing this blog. Anyways, back to Mekanix. They have only been open for about 3-4 months and are located right next to the El Tiempo on Montrose (if you live in Houston I know you know exactly where that is). I highly suggest giving Mekanix a try. You can’t beat a killer workout with great customer service. And I know the workout sounded intense, but it really is for all levels. There are always modifications and I can only speak on behalf of Greg, but he really took the time to work on technique with me and never made me feel like I was a little weakling, even though I felt like one many times.
Mad props to my impromtu workout buddy @patticontrasto for pushing me and encouraging me even more! #ballslams
